When you visit my hometown, Cigudeg, you will find these plants scattered in various fields, on the house yard, farm lands, garden, or even on the edge of the roads and forests. The trees and fruit are called “banana”. The term “banana” is also used for a number of species that do not produce fruit, such as abaca banana, ornamental banana, and fan banana. This post discusses only the fruit-bearing edible banana which are most popular in the region. As you have known, there are some bananas must go through the process first to be eaten (cooked, baked, fried or steamed) while most of them can be eaten straight when ripe. most of bananas have yellow skin when ripe, though some were colored orange, red, green, purple, or even almost black. Bananas are sources of energy (carbohydrates) and minerals, especially potassium and contain anti-oxidant. It is very good for health.

The bananas that can be eaten straight when ripe
As usual, most of the farmers bring the crops to the local market at early morning, every day and carry out a transaction with the bananas collectors in a way similar to tender or auction, from there the collectors distribute the bananas to the some major cities nearby.

Such variety! Do you have a favourite banana? I see some taro(?) in the second to last photo. Taro is a root crop I enjoy. It makes a change from potatoes. You probably know more exciting recipes.

In Indonesia I realized that there are so many different kind of bananas!
We had a lot of them, much better than the “standard” bananas sold in European supermarkets.
The small ones (Lampung?), with very thin skin were my favorites. They were sweet but still had a good/perfect quantity of acidity. I think I will never have so good bananas like in Indonesia.
@Gallivanta, I love taro as food and as ornamental plant. Two years ago I got a small piece that was “over” in an Asian specialty shop, the lady gave me this as present as she knew I love plants. I followed her suggestion, placed it in a pot and now I have a beautiful plant for my house.

I understand that many countries import only certain kind of bananas, like Cavendish bananas which is most popular and has a better smooth skin and beautiful shape while other kinds are mostly too large or its appearance is not attractive.
