Costus is a genus of perennial tropical herbaceous plants from the costaceae family, is also known as Spiral Ginger (English) and Pacing (Cigudeg, West Java, Indonesia). The most common varieties are found growing naturally in the tropical countries all over the world. Clumps spread easily and produce plants that normally grow from 1 to 3 meters tall. Costus differs from the common ginger by having only one row of spirally arranged leaves.
Most of the species of These plants have large glossy looking leaves, smooth, dark green leaves are spirally arranged around the stem, forming attractive, arching clumps arising from underground rootstocks. The flowers are Various in colors and are beautiful, they appear to be cone-like heads at the tips of branches and many species bare the flowers in separate stem that emerge from the clumps.
Some of the Costus family are native to Southeast Asia, especially on the Greater Sunda Islands in Indonesia, namely Java, Sumatera, Kalimantan,Sulawesi and West Papua. They are also used as traditional medicine for curing asthma, cough, severe intestinal diseases such as dysentery and cholera. It is also used as a tonic and to stimulate digestion and it is reported to have been used for diabetes too.
Costus plants are also cultivated in Indonesia and elsewhere as an ornamental.
Costus adalah suatu genus tanaman herba tropis dari keluarga costaceae , juga dikenal sebagai Spiral Ginger ( Inggris) dan Pacing ( Cigudeg , Jawa Barat , Indonesia ) . Varietas yang paling umum ditemukan tumbuh alami di negara-negara tropis di seluruh dunia . umbinya menyebar dengan mudah dan menghasilkan tanaman yang biasanya tumbuh hingga 1 sampai 3 meter tingginya . Costus berbeda dari jahe umum dengan hanya memiliki satu baris daun spiral yang teratur.
Sebagian besar spesies tanaman ini memiliki daun besar yang nampak mengkilap, halus , daun berwarna hijau gelap dengan susunan seperti spiral di sepanjang batang , membentuk susunan menarik, batangnya melengkung yang timbul dari umbi bawah tanah . Bunganya Berbagai warna dan indah , bunga-bunga itu berbentuk seperti kepala kerucut di ujung pucuknya dan banyak spesies mengeluarkan bunga pada batang terpisah yang muncul dari rumpun .
Beberapa keluarga Costus berasal dari Asia Tenggara , terutama pada Kepulauan Sunda Besar di Indonesia , yaitu Jawa , Sumatera , Kalimantan , Sulawesi dan Papua Barat . Tumbuhan ini juga digunakan sebagai obat tradisional untuk menyembuhkan asma , batuk , penyakit usus yang parah seperti disentri dan kolera . Hal ini juga digunakan sebagai tonik dan merangsang pencernaan dan dilaporkan telah digunakan untuk pengobatan diabetes.
Tanaman Costus juga dibudidayakan di Indonesia dan di tempat lain sebagai tanaman hias .
