It is commonly called as Torch Ginger, Red Ginger Lily, Wild Ginger in English, Kecombrang, Kantan or Honje in Indonesian, Wax Flower in The Philippines, Daalaa in Thailand, Siantan in Malaysia, and still many other names in other countries for this species of herbaceous perennial plant in the family of Gingiberaceae with Botanic name is called “Etlingera Elatior”.
The plant shape is similar to Ginger but huge or Amomum Megalochielos, as high as of 5 meters with long-stemmed flowers emerge from the rhizomes that spread underground, 0.5-1.5 meters long, in a top -shaped bouquet, pink to bright red colors, fleshy, curved reverse if it blooms with protective leaves in oblong shape, tubes petal shape, 3-5 cm long. The Crown is in the shape of tubes, in pink color similar to the labellum spatula, about 4 cm in length, bright red with white or yellow edges.
The fruit are packed in the head, short haired smooth on the outside, green and red when ripe. Seedy, dark brown, with a sour taste .
In Indonesia, the flowers are mainly used as flavoring or seasoning mixture of a wide variety of cuisines, the leaves have the highest antioxidant and antibacterial.
Tanaman ini biasa disebut sebagai Torch Ginger, Red Ginger Lily, Wild Ginger dalam bahasa Inggris, kecombrang, Kantan atau Honje di Indonesia, Wax Flower di Filipina, Daalaa di Thailand, Siantan di Malaysia, dan masih banyak nama lain di negara-negara lainnya untuk spesies tanaman abadi herba dalam keluarga Gingiberaceae ini dengan nama Botanic “Etlingera elatior” .
Bentuk tanaman ini mirip dengan jahe tapi besar atau Amomum Megalochielos setinggi 5 meter dengan bunga bertangkai panjang muncul dari rimpang yang menyebar di bawah tanah, panjang 0,5-1,5 meter, di bagian atasnya berbentuk buket, pink sampai dengan warna merah cerah, berdaging, melengkung membalik jika mekar dengan daun pelindung dalam bentuk lonjong panjang, tabung kelopak bentuk, 3-5 cm panjang. Mahkota bunga berbentuk tabung, berwarna pink mirip dengan spatula labellum, sekitar 4 cm panjangnya, merah terang dengan tepi putih atau kuning.
Buah berada dalam susunan tangkai, berambut pendek halus berwarna hijau dan merah saat matang dan berbiji banyak, berwarna coklat tua dengan rasa masam (asam) .
Di Indonesia , bunganya terutama digunakan sebagai penyedap atau campuran bumbu dari berbagai masakan, sedangkan daunnya memiliki antioksidan tinggi, dan antibakteri.

I used to eat the raw flowers when I was a child and my mother used to clean our bodies with crushed soaking young plant.

I still remember it. It made our skin really clean,smooth and scent. I just knew it when I grew up that the plant’s leaf is antibacterial. The above photos were taken at Botanic garden near my house few days ago, but I saw the neighbor at my mother’s home town still grow this plant. Someday I will ask them for a plant to grow at my garden here.
