Indonesia, which consists of various tribes are very rich with cultural diversity attached firmly to any indigenous life as an ancestral tradition that binds their lifestyle, both in everyday lives and in carrying out certain things that are sacred such as religious worshiping, marriage, maintaining pregnancy, welcoming the birth of a baby up to the ceremony to release the children marrying their partners making every event in life into something that could be considered historic in terms of family life and society. That is the traditions of Indonesian.
The traditions that are fully filled with elements, remain as a symbol of eternal life in the hearts of every member of the nation of Indonesia. Although, in its development has been influenced by various beliefs held by each group of people, ie Muslims, Christians, Hindus and Buddhists.
RELIGION AND TRADITION
Parents have the most important role in nursing the child from birth to adulthood and get married. So a marriage is one thing that concerns a human regeneration, its implementation is placed in the position of a sacred ceremony that is expected to occur only once in a lifetime. At that moment parents relinquish their children for a new life and hold a responsibilities of family life independently.
Implementation of a wedding ceremony is usually held in a series consisting of a combination of two things that the underlying , ie the fulfillment of the requirements prescribed by religion and then combined with the ceremony and reception according to the customs of his ancestors respectively. It is commonly take place at the residence of the bride parents . In this modern era , the wedding celebration is mostly done in a special place for a wedding reception with more simple ceremony.
This time I will present a series of my son’s traditional wedding ceremonies which is derived from the traditions of our ancestors, the Sundanese. A society that inhabit the western part of Java Island.
The Sundanese traditional wedding that we performed is now more simplified , as adapted to the situation , the provisions of Islamic law , the legalization of Government and Legal Entity and practical values under consideration of the constraints of time , place , man power and especially the cost.
THE SUNDANESE TRADITIONAL WEDDING
This ceremony includes several steps, among others:
1. Pengajian dan Siraman (the prayer and bathing the bride and the groom which is hold a day before the wedding)
2. Seren–Sumeren ( The parents release the groom and surrender him to the bride’s parents )
3. akad Nikah (the wedding ceremony)
4. Sungkeman (the bride and groom kneel to their parents)
5. Sawer Panganten (spreading yellow rice on the bride and groom)
6. Nincak Endog (cracking an egg)
7. Meuleum Harupat (burning sticks of sugar palm leaves)
8. meupeus kendi (breaking a jug)
9. parebut bakakak (scrambling grilled chicken)
10. Resepsi (reception)
ACARA PENGAJIAN DAN SIRAMAN
This event is held a day prior to the wedding
Recitation of a prayer event that is meant to appeal to the Almighty God (Allah) that the implementation of marriage goes with the blessing of Allah Subhanahu Wataala. This event was never done by the Prophet, but permitted by the scholars.Then followed by a ceremonial bathing.
Started by the bride and groom request permission to parents to get married. He knelt in front of their parents to apologize for any mistakes during he was raised. Then with great affection, the father of the bride/groom carry him on his back to the place where he will be washed by walking on a seven layers of Batik Cloth, symbolizing seven layers of earth, in which the resources for life is exist.
Bathing the child is a symbol of the duty of parents is coming to an end, as the beforehand of a child to be bathed by his parents, then he is seated and bathed with water and seven kinds of fragrant flowers, symbolizing seven wishes; Health, love, affection, happiness, independent, welfare, and having children.
At first, the father pour the flowered water on to the body of the bride/groom, then his mother, followed by turns his grandfather and grandmother from his father and then from his mother’s side.Finally by other ladies who used to look after him when he was a child.
The ceremony is commonly ended with grabbing pastries and gifts by the audience.
