Nimble and rather stout, the head as if fused with a fat sturdy neck and has clean scaly skin , shiny and slippery. The food consists of various insects, worms, small frogs, and other reptiles such as smaller lizards.Bengkarung or Garden lizard as it’s called will release its tail to escape when it was chased by wild cats or other predators, it has a sensor at the tip of the tail that sends an emergency signal to the brain and quickly passes it back to the cells at the base of the tail behind the anus that holds liquid. Quick as a flash the liquid will heat up and automatically cut the tail off the body. The tail will still twitching as the motoric nerve keep working for a while causing predators think it has been been caught. Bengkarung tail will grow back to normal size until they reach up to one-quarter times the length of its body.

I have always loved lizards and used to study them closely when I was a child too. I kept them in our garden and then released them of course. Great photo!
Once, in the 1980’s, I stayed in the Nepali mountains at a ghurka warriors home and in the mornings he had big varans (at least they looked like varans) walking through his garden. I admit they were a bit too big for my liking…but fantastic creatures.
